Lapsang Souchong is a black tea with a distinctive smoky aroma and a taste of wood smoke and tobacco. Depending on the variety, it can also have a rich flavor of whiskey, pine resin and smoked paprika.
Lapsang Souchong is a traditional Chinese tea that originates in the Wuyi Mountains in the Fujian region of China.
Although the Wuyi region was traditionally known for producing Oolong tea, Lapsang first emerged during a military conflict in the region. Peasants fleeing the Qing army were looking for a way to speed up the process of making tea leaves. They decided to dry the leaves by smoking them over a pine wood fire, rather than letting them dry naturally. The tea leaves were then sold to Dutch traders, who, despite its distinctive taste, sold the tea, and it quickly became popular.
Preparation: Pour 2-3g of tea into a cup with hot water (at a temperature of 85-95 degrees) and allow to steep for 3-5 minutes.
